What the classics read it as

《滴天髓》

Yang Fire. The sun — not a flame, not a candle, the thing that is simply on and does not choose what it falls on.

《滴天髓》 is blunt about the temperament: 「丙火猛烈,欺霜侮雪」. Bing fire is fierce; it bullies frost and insults snow. Then it says something stranger. 「能煅庚金,逢辛反怯」 — it can smelt 庚, the raw blade, and yet meeting 辛, the finished jewel, it turns timid. The strongest fire in the system is undone not by water but by the small polished thing it wants.

What it loves: 壬, the wide water, because the classical image is sunlight running along a river and the two together make something neither has alone. It loves 庚 as work — hard metal is what fierce fire is for.

What it fears: 「土眾成慈,水猖顯節」. Too much earth and the fire goes kind, which sounds like a compliment and is not; earth drains fire in this system, and a 丙 buried in it becomes agreeable and stops burning. Rampant water forces it to show restraint, which it does badly.

The character: 丙 is the least private of the ten stems. It cannot be partly present. What it warms it warms completely and what it scorches it scorches without intent, and the tradition treats the absence of intent as the actual problem rather than as an excuse.

The cost: the sun does not get to pick. You will be read as generous and as overbearing by different people for the same behaviour on the same day, and both readings will be accurate.
