What the classics read it as

Yang Water. The great river — 「壬水通河」, Ren water runs through to the river, and what defines it is that it does not stop.

「剛中之德,周流不滯」 — a firmness held inside the middle of it, circulating everywhere and stagnating nowhere. This is the most quietly demanding line given to any of the ten stems. The virtue named is not depth or generosity. It is not stopping. A river that pools is no longer a river, and the classical reading of a blocked 壬 is not that it becomes still but that it becomes something else.

What it loves: 「能洩金氣」 — it drains the force out of metal, which in this system is the pressure of being supported and expected. Water is where that goes. It loves anything that gives it somewhere to run: work that continues, ground that slopes.

What it fears: 「通根透癸,沖天奔地」 — rooted below and with 癸 showing above, it rushes at the sky and runs at the ground. Too much of itself and it floods. This Day Master is the one most often undone by its own quantity rather than by opposition, and the classics are specific that the failure looks like force rather than like weakness.

The character: wide, hard to fix in one place, and better at moving than at holding. 「化則有情,從則相濟」 — transformed it becomes affectionate, following it becomes mutual aid. Both of those describe water taking a shape from something else, which is the only way it holds one.

The cost: you may take from it. You may not keep it.
