What the month does to the Day Master

Born in 巳, the first month of summer, with a wood Day Master. This is 休 — resting. Wood produces fire, and in a fire month the Self is spending itself continuously into the season.

巳 carries 丙 fire, 庚 metal and 戊 earth. None of the three supports wood. The fire draws it out, the metal cuts at it, the earth takes what the fire leaves. It is one of the branches that offers a wood Self nothing directly, and the classical texts are unsentimental about saying so.

But 休 is not 死. Resting means depleted rather than destroyed, and the 調候 method that 《窮通寶鑑》 sets out reads early summer as a heat problem with a simple requirement: water. A wood Self in 巳 wants moisture at the root above everything else, and where the chart supplies it the structure works well — a tree in early summer with water is a tree in leaf.

What such a chart does not want is more fire, and this is where the reading turns counter-intuitive. Output looks like productivity and reads here as drain.

失令 sets the direction of every later section. It is a structural position, not a forecast, and the literature is full of accomplished charts that lost the month.
