A 木 Wood Day Master and a 火 Fire Day Master

The two Day Masters

The relation here is 我生 wǒ shēng — you generate them. Your Day Master is Wood; the other chart's is 火 huǒ, Fire, and in the productive cycle Wood is what Fire is made of. That direction has to be named before a word is said about how any of it feels, because it settles which way the traffic runs. Whatever moves between the two of you moves out of you and into them. 《三命通會》 states the mechanism and its price in one breath: 木能生火，火多木焚 — "Wood is able to produce Fire; where the Fire is excessive, the Wood is burnt away." The tradition calls this drain 洩 xiè, and it is unsentimental about what drain means. Generation is not a gift made out of surplus. It is a conversion. The flame is the visible event and the fuel is what is no longer there afterwards.

From the inside this rarely arrives as resentment. It arrives as being useful immediately and understood slowly. Fire is quick, warm and legible to a whole room; Wood is structural and gets to its point late. So the pattern that settles is one in which your material becomes their occasion — your reading turns into their argument, your plan into their announcement, your patience into their confidence. None of that is theft. It is what the cycle does when it is working.

Their side of the ledger is the one readers skip. A flame cannot choose its fuel. Fire in this position is not free of you: it is brighter than you, contingent on you, and less able to hold itself up, and it generally knows this without saying so. What Fire pays is autonomy, along with the particular indignity of being credited for a warmth it did not manufacture.

What you pay is substance, and the account can be overdrawn. Wood burnt to keep a fire spectacular does not come back inside the same season, and the classics treat that as arithmetic rather than tragedy. The configuration is no argument against the pairing. It is an argument against unmetered giving, which is unfortunately the only kind Wood tends to practise.

Something to check rather than believe. After a long evening in their company, notice which of you has more to say the following morning — who was replenished by the encounter, and who was quietly finished with talking.
