The two Day Masters

Two Day Masters of one phase stand in what the tradition calls 比和 bǐhé — parity. Neither of you generates the other, neither controls the other. Your Day Master is Wood and so is theirs, which means the productive and controlling cycles have nothing at all to say about who owes whom. That silence is the entire condition, and it should not be mistaken for ease.

《淵海子平》 lays its ground before it says anything about a pair: 人稟天地，命屬陰陽，生居覆載之內，盡在五行之中 — "a person takes their allotment from heaven and earth, and life is assigned to yin and yang; born between what covers above and what carries below, all of it falls within the five phases." Two people inside one phase are inside the same clause of that sentence. Nothing between you requires translation. You are not two languages meeting; you are one language with two speakers.

The image for Wood is never the tree by itself. It is growth with a direction — the refusal to remain at the size already reached, a reaching towards light that neither of you put in the sky. Set two of those in one plot and the reaching does not cancel out. It doubles. What the classics flag in 比和 is not a clash of temperament but competition for supply: you draw on the same nourishment, you want the same ground, and neither of you was built to stand in the other's shade.

The gift is that you almost never have to justify the impulse. Wood's hurry, which in a mixed pairing has to be explained and defended, here reads as simply obvious. The cost is exactly symmetrical, and it is that neither of you is the other's brake. Nothing in this configuration slows either party. What one begins the other seconds, and a household can accelerate for years without a single person in it having wanted to. The old planting distinction is the useful one. Two trees set apart both fill out and both bear. Two set too close both grow tall and thin and neither fruits, because each is climbing past the other for the same light. Sameness is not agreement. It is the absence of resistance, which is a different thing and a more expensive one.
