A 火 Fire Day Master and a 木 Wood Day Master

The two Day Masters

Take the direction first, because everything else follows from it. This is 生我 shēng wǒ — they generate you. The other chart's Day Master is 木 mù, Wood; yours is Fire, and in the productive cycle Wood is what Fire is made of. They are the substance. You are the event happening to it. 《三命通會》 puts the exchange from the giving side: 強木得火，方化其頑 — "Wood that is strong, obtaining Fire, only then has its stubbornness converted." That is a compliment paid to the fire, and it is worth understanding exactly. Wood on its own is dense, patient, slow to release anything it has accumulated. It does not become light by trying harder. It becomes light by meeting a flame. Whatever they have been storing — years of it, usually — reaches the room through you or does not reach the room at all.

Which is why your position here is easy to mistake for the strong one. You are the visible half. You are quicker, warmer, better in company, and the credit for what the two of you produce lands on the person who was burning rather than the person who was burnt. A flame is not an object but a process, and a process cannot store anything. You have no reserves of your own in this configuration. What you have is theirs, converted.

Their cost is the plain one and it is charged in substance. Wood spent on a fire does not return within the season, and a person in that seat can be reduced steadily while looking, from outside, like the one who is simply there and does not do much.

Your cost is stranger and less discussed. Anything wholly supplied cannot be wholly yours. Fire that has never been short of fuel does not learn its own size, and dependence of this kind is invisible for as long as the supply holds and unmistakable for about a week after it stops. The classics do not treat that as a fault. They treat it as the standing condition of anything that burns.

Something you can check against your own life rather than take on trust. Name one thing they stopped doing, or gave up doing well, during the period in which you were doing your best work. If nothing comes to mind, ask them.
