A Wood Day Master and a Metal Day Master

The first thing the tradition settles about two charts is not sentiment but direction: which way the traffic runs between the two Day Masters. Here it is 剋我 — they control you.

The two Day Masters

《三命通會》

The direction runs towards you here. This is 剋我 kè wǒ — they control you. The other chart's Day Master is 金 jīn, Metal, yours is Wood, and Metal is the phase that cuts Wood. In the ten-god system an element that controls your Day Master takes the 官殺 guānshā seat, the officer, which the tradition treats as the position of legitimate constraint rather than of harm. 《三命通會》 does not soften the first fact: 木弱逢金,必為砍折 — "Wood that is weak, meeting Metal, is certain to be cut through." That is the risk, stated flatly, and it deserves to be read before the consolation.

Now the consolation, which is not sentimental. Timber becomes useful under a blade and in no other way. Unworked wood is bulk; a tree left entirely to itself puts everything into height and length and very little into fruit, and the old orchard practice of cutting a young tree back hard was not cruelty but the only method known for producing anything worth picking. Metal is the phase of judgement, edge and finish. In this pairing it is the source of every sentence in your shared life that begins *no, not like that*.

What you pay is obvious and it is still worth saying. Correction from this quarter lands on the body rather than the argument. Wood grows by extension and cannot easily distinguish between having a proposal declined and having a limb removed, so the same remark that a different phase would file under useful, you will carry for a week.

What they pay is being the limit, permanently and by structure. Someone has to be the one who says the sum does not work, the plan is a month short, the tone was wrong. That person is experienced as coldness while they are being accurate, and they are rarely thanked in the moment for the shape they are producing. Metal blunts against work; precision is expensive to maintain and easy to be resented for. The whole matter turns on whether the cut has a shape: pruning removes wood in the service of a form, and hacking removes wood.

Something to check against your own life. Recall the last three corrections they gave you. Ask, for each, whether it left you a form to grow into, or simply left you smaller.
