A Earth Day Master and a Metal Day Master

The first thing the tradition settles about two charts is not sentiment but direction: which way the traffic runs between the two Day Masters. Here it is 我生 — you generate them.

The two Day Masters

《三命通會》

Name the direction before anything else: 我生 wǒ shēng — you generate them. Your Day Master is Earth; the other chart's is 金 jīn, Metal, and in the productive cycle Earth is what yields Metal. The image is not decorative. Ore is a concentration inside ground, and every edge that has ever existed was drawn out of a mass that had no edge.

《三命通會》 attaches the price where it belongs: 土能生金,金多土弱 — "Earth is able to produce Metal; where the Metal is plentiful, the Earth is weakened." The verb is not broken or damaged. It is 弱 ruò, thinned, made less able to bear. What this looks like in a shared life is that your accumulation becomes their definition. You gather slowly and without much system — contacts, savings, obligations, patience, the general capacity to absorb a bad year. They take a narrow part of that and make it sharp. The judgement they are admired for, the standard they hold, the exactness that other people find impressive and occasionally chilling: it is refined out of ground you laid down long before either of you discussed it. They are the distillate and you are the deposit, and only one of those two things is visible from across a room.

Their cost follows from being the smaller, harder thing. Metal has finish and no reserve. A person in this seat can be precise about a decision and have nothing whatsoever to fall back on if the decision goes badly, and they know the difference between their own resources and yours even when nobody says it aloud.

Your cost is 弱 and it is quiet. Extraction does not announce itself; ground does not report what has been taken out of it, and Earth's particular blindness is that it registers depletion only at the point of subsidence, years after the fact. You will not feel over-drawn. You will simply find, one ordinary week, that a thing you used to do easily has become heavy.

Something to check against your own life rather than accept. Recall the last time you were asked for something and said yes. Then work out whether you paused, at any point, to establish that you still had it.
