The two Day Masters
Two Day Masters in one phase: 比和 bǐhé, parity. Yours is Earth, and so is theirs. Neither generates the other and neither controls the other, so the two engines that drive every mixed pairing are both switched off. Whatever is between you, the five-phase relation is not supplying it.
《滴天髓》 opens its account of the married pair with a line that is useful precisely because it declines to explain: 夫妻姻緣宿世來 — "the tie that binds a married pair comes down out of a former age." The classics do not claim the chart produced the bond. They claim it describes the terms. Similarity was never the criterion, and no text in this tradition treats two of a kind as a recommendation. What two Earths actually have is durability, and it is not a small thing. Ground beside ground does not erode ground. This is the pairing that survives illness, money trouble, relocation and long stretches of not much being said, because neither party is built to leave and neither is being worn down by the other. Households like this outlast a great many that were more interesting to watch.
The cost is written into the same fact. Earth is the phase that holds, and a pair of them has no internal source of movement whatsoever. Nothing here breaks ground, nothing here pours through, nothing here burns. Arrangements made in the first year are still in force in the fifteenth, not because they were examined and kept but because nothing in the configuration was going to disturb them. The characteristic failure is not conflict but compaction — two people who have not disagreed in years and have also not decided anything in years, where the absence of friction has been read the whole time as consent.
Nor is there anyone to name it. Both of you will wait, and waiting is what each of you does best. The tradition's remedy is not internal; it is that change in this pairing comes from outside it, and the pair has to be willing to let something in.
