A 土 Earth Day Master and a 火 Fire Day Master

The two Day Masters

The direction runs into you. This is 生我 shēng wǒ — they generate you. The other chart's Day Master is 火 huǒ, Fire; yours is Earth, and in the productive cycle Fire is what makes Earth. The literal image underneath the theory is combustion: what burns becomes ash, and ash becomes ground. Their heat, spent, is your substance.

《三命通會》 records the transaction from the far side: 強火得土，方止其焰 — "Fire that is strong, obtaining Earth, only then has its blaze halted." Note that the sentence is about them, and note what it says. Receiving is not passive here. You are what stops the burning, and stopping the burning is the service you perform simply by existing where they can reach you. That is why this pairing tends to feel, from your side, like being kept warm without effort. A great deal arrives — conviction, appetite, opinions, the temperature of a room — and none of it required you to produce anything. The classics do not disapprove. They only point out what everything received has in common: you did not choose the contents. Earth in this seat accumulates whatever the fire happened to be burning, including the enthusiasms that were never yours and the certainties you have never independently examined. Over a long time that becomes a person with firm views and no memory of arriving at them.

Your other cost is temperature. Ground warmed by another's fire is warm for exactly as long as the fire burns, and Earth has no way to generate heat of its own. Quiet periods in this pairing are colder for you than they are for them, and the temptation is to keep them burning rather than to be cold — which is a way of asking someone to spend themselves for your comfort.

Their cost is written in 止其焰. To be received is to stop travelling. A flame that has found ground stays there and stops being the thing it was, and some part of them knows the exchange has been made.
