A 水 Water Day Master and a 木 Wood Day Master

The two Day Masters

Take the direction first: 我生 wǒ shēng — you generate them. Your Day Master is Water; the other chart's is 木 mù, Wood, and in the productive cycle Water is what Wood is made from. Everything else in this pairing follows from the fact that the supply runs one way, and that it runs out of you.

《滴天髓》 keeps a whole chapter for the way this particular direction goes wrong, and titles it in seven characters: 母慈滅子關頭異 — "where the mother is over-kind, the child is undone; the turning point in this is peculiar." Peculiar because there is no moment of harm in it. Nothing is withheld and nothing is done badly. The excess is the mechanism. What that means in practice is that support has a threshold, and past it the effect reverses. Roots that have never had to go looking for water do not go down. A tree given more moisture than it can use is not stronger, it is lifted — held up by what surrounds it rather than by anything beneath it, and the day the supply changes it has nothing to stand on. The failure here is not neglect but sufficiency, delivered too early and too reliably, which is a form of care almost nobody recognises as a risk while it is happening.

Their cost is that a life arranged in advance offers very little to push against, and Wood is a phase that only develops by pushing. They may be doing well and still be unable to name a difficulty they solved on their own.

Your cost is dissolution, and it is the characteristic one for this phase. Water entering a tree does not remain water. It becomes sap, then leaf, then height, and there is no stage at which it can be recovered. You take the shape of whatever you are poured into, and in this configuration the container is a person. What goes missing is not time or money, which you would notice. It is the boundary between what you want and what they need, and by the time the two are indistinguishable you will no longer have the equipment to tell them apart.
